From partly very old vines planted in 1939, the 2018 Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle trocken Magnus is a picture-book wine for this vineyard, says Jakob Schneider. Ripe and cloudy apple juice aromas intermixing with yeasty and crystalline Riesling notes are quite similar on the nose to mature Champagne. On the palate, this is a lush and round, crystalline, fine and pure, persistently tensioned and salty Riesling with the generosity and balance of a great wine. This is a powerful but relaxed, refined and balanced Riesling with vivacious character and grip. Tasted in July 2019.

As usual, there are two dry Hermannshöhle Rieslings from Schneider, of which this is ostensibly the superior. It’s certainly the heftier, weighing in at 13.4% alcohol. That comparative weightiness is very much intentional on his part. (This bottling always incorporates the fruit of Schneider’s oldest Hermannshöhle vines, but beyond that he has a lot of liberty in determining what ends up in this “Magus” bottling and what goes into its less-expensive counterpart.) And this is raised not just partly but exclusively in cask. Pungent green herbs, struck flint, smoky black tea and piquantly pit-tinged peach set the stage aromatically for a complex interplay of flavors on the full, glossy palate. The finish is glowingly intense and happily heat-free, delivering admirable refreshment as well as an invigorating sense of stony, smoky, alkaline and herbal impingements. Here is one of those examples this year chez Schneider where a bit of extra reduction helps convey energy to a relatively weighty wine. What fascination these two contrasting Schneider Hermannshöhle bottlings offer in 2018 – a fascination that should only increase as one follows their evolution in bottle.
