OCTOBER 2024 - CEELLAR ACCESS!!

OCTOBER 2024 - CEELLAR ACCESS!!

by Garrett Smith

It’s October. Do you know what that means?

The unavoidable “What Wine Pairs with Halloween Candy” article is on your socials and, of course, the new release of our Cellar Access.

Even though somebody out there had the brilliant idea to coin “Sober October,” we at Thatchers are not big fans of this idea. October is a month filled to the brim with fun and exciting events, building up to one of the wildest holidays for kids and adults alike. It is also the ramp-up into the full-blown holiday season, and it's a good idea to start building up your cellar in October to be ready for the inevitable arrival of your friends and relatives.

So, for this selection, rather than going with any particular theme (“spooky wines for Halloween” is just so camp and entirely not in our repertoire), we chose your wines based on drinkability and versatility to go with any food or occasion.

Though we’d maybe avoid the “Aligote and Nerds Rope” pairing!

NV Savart & Dremont, Ephemere 018 Grand Cru, Champagne

The 018 selection is 100 % Chardonnay from Grand Cru villages of Avize, Oger, and Cramant, which is entirely different from the 017 as that was 100% Pinot Noir. The Cuvee was selected from old vines, with 2g/l of dosage.

The wine's character on the nose evokes key lime, yogurt, koji, cheesecake, sweet brioche, lemon, and apple. The palate is not super robust but still very giving, with citrus showing a pithier and zestier note due to the acid. A slight phenolic character is present on the mid-palate and finish, with a touch of flinty reductiveness throughout.

Savart & Dremont

The Savart & Dramont all star team includes: Fred Savart, the pioneer, instigator, and savvy broker with a penchant for finding well-positioned sites; Philippe and Manu, knowledgeable tasters with a distribution and marketing prowess in France; Champagne Drémont with holdings mainly in the Côte des Blancs (Avize, Oger & Mesnil).

At this moment, they are buying wines from various growers in well positioned vineyards. This creates a bit of a diversity in styles of their various cuvees, however the quality is always the primary focus.

While enhanced exposure of these special sites was the initial objective, their project has evolved with loftier ambitions and they are starting their first vinification with the 2023 harvest.

2021 Yves Boyer-Martenot, Bourgogne Aligote

The 10-70-year-old Aligote vines grow in the vineyards on the outskirts of Meursault, where the soils are deeper and more fertile. These soils are unsuitable for Pinot Noir or Chardonnay but an excellent fit for Aligote. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. The wine proceeds with elevage in mainly neutral, older French oak and then concrete egg.

What surprised us the most about the Yves Boyer Martenot Aligote was just how richly structured it was. Much Aligote is very thin: high in acid but low in body and complexity. This Aligote, on the other hand, was juicy and rich, and its structure complemented the lightning-bolt acidity. The Yves-Boyer Martenot Aligote is a perfect aperitif wine but may get you in trouble if you hope to avoid drinking too much, as it is very crushable.

2022 Domaine Morey Coffinet, Bourgogne, Rouge

From 1 ha clay parcel, with the oldest vines planted in 1978. Vinified and aged for 10-12 months in 228 and 350-liter oak barrels, using 25-35% new oak. The wine is unfined and unfiltered.

This wine is on the more indulgent side of Pinot Noir, with ample red fruited character permeating. However, a countercurrent of structured minerality and pinpoint acidity balances out the fruit-forward character.
