Aurelien got an early, explosive start in his winemaking career, woorking at Domaine Jamet in his teens before working for years with Francois Villard. Coaxed by Villard into pursuing his own project, as talent naturally exuded from him, Aurelien started with just one hectare but has carefully built a strong stable of vineyards. To this day the wines are made in his house's own cellar, all de-stemmed, fermented with native yeasts in fiberglass tanks.

Aurelien Chatagnier

Following his impressive aprenticeships with Jamet and Villard, Aurelien started with a mere hectare of rented vines but has traded and purchased his way to 10 hectares owned by his domaine at the northern end of Saint-Joseph. His focus is very much on the health of the vines, tending all of his vineyards organically and truly focusing on purity in his wines.

In his small cellars, most red wines are aged in barrels for 18 months while the whites are direct-pressed into barrels and fermented within, bottling only when the wine has settled. From a humble man, the wines are exuberant, expressive and beautifully structured.

Glass-staining ruby. Fresh cherry, blackberry, candied licorice, bacon and potpourri aromas are complemented by a smoky mineral top note. Bright and energetic on the palate, offering focused red and dark berry, cracked pepper and floral pastille flavors with a suggestion of salty olive. Finishes with smoky mineral and floral notes, harmonious tannins and very good tenacity.
