Vinous

(bottled in September) Saturated medium ruby. Blackberry, black cherry, truffle, smoked meat, violet and pepper on the nose, along with a hint of dark berry confiture. Deep and fresh but rather closed and tight; less smooth and supple today than the 2001. Dark fruit flavors complicated by notes of violet and brown spices, with finishing suggestions of licorice and pepper. Still a bit shocked by the recent bottling and thus lacking pliancy on the finish. Shows less volume and evidence of surmaturite than the 2001, but this wine offers lovely spicy syrah character and should blossom with five to seven years of bottle aging.
